A letter from Rabbi Moshe LaBrie,
Director Mesorah Center/Kaufman Hebrew School:

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding The Kaufman Hebrew School. We are excited about the response and interest we have seen and we are looking forward to a productive year with a motivated group of students and families. We hope your child will be part of our Hebrew School. Below is some information you will find useful. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Administration – The Kaufman Hebrew School is run by The Mesorah Center. The Mesorah Center for Continuing Jewish Education is a non-affiliated adult education organization dedicated to the furtherance of Jewish identity and heritage through positive learning experiences. The Kaufman Hebrew School offers each family their own Family educator who will be there to make you and your child’s Jewish Education experience rewarding. All educational questions should be addressed to the Family educator assigned to your family.

Philosophy & Goals - The goal of The Kaufman Hebrew School is to stimulate awareness among our participant families that Judaism can be relevant. This is done through imaginative and thought provoking teaching methods and hands-on experience. The approach is to encourage the family to join in the learning process. This makes the student’s education much more meaningful. We hope our students will view Hebrew School as a milestone in their life and not as a dead-end Jewish experience.

The secret of our success is twofold. First of all, the Jewish education your child is receiving is enjoyable, exciting, and low-pressure. We gauge success not by how well or how many Torah Verses he/she can recite at the bar/bat mitzvah celebration. Rather, our desire is that every week, every child actually looks forward to learning about Judaism, thus making Judaism a lifelong endeavor.

Family Education - The second component to our success rate is the under-rated element of parent involvement. Remember when you asked why you had to go to Hebrew school? Because “I had to go” was the answer you usually got from your folks. But imagine if years back, your folks didn’t just drop you off at school to pick you up two or three hours later. Imagine that just once, they stayed with you, grew with you, studied Torah with you, and actually showed an interest in your Hebrew School experience. We want our students to go to Hebrew School because everyone in their family is participating. To implement this we have provided many family and adult programs designed to enrich the total Hebrew School experience for your child. Offerings will include Hebrew reading crash course, Jewish life cycle, Holidays, Adult bar/bat mitzvah program, etc. Free baby-sitting services are available. There is nothing better for your child’s motivation than to see you joining him/her in a Jewish education!

Parent Program - The highlight of the adult education is the Parents classes that are held on Sunday mornings. Its benefits are numerous. You have an opportunity to study the same topic your children are studying. You can also discuss Jewish issues in an open forum. Let’s face it, even if you attended Hebrew School as a child, Judaism is more sophisticated to a forty-year old than it is to a  thirteen-year-old. Most important is the profound effect your child will receive knowing that Mom or Dad isn’t just dropping them off at Hebrew School. They are active participants in their growth in Judaism. It’s our secret to success!

Weekend Retreats - In addition, we have included a weekend retreat (Mesorah Center's Kaufman Hebrew School Family Weekend) as part of the curriculum. The exciting activities and social atmosphere of the weekend is crucial in developing positive attitudes towards Judaism. There are about five or six per year, and every family is required to attend at least one family retreat during the school year. These weekends are all held in a 4-star hotel less than two hours away. They are packed with fun activities for your children, supervised by a professional, caring, volunteer, camp staff. The program consists of stimulating presentations by world-renowned lecturers, plus all the amenities of a 4-star hotel. Many families have already experienced the Gateways weekend, and we feel it is the most important program we provide the entire year. (For more info check out www.gatewaysonline.com) Normally the cost of the weekend for four days and three nights including all meals and tips is $299.00 per adult and $150.00 per child. However, we have arranged an extremely reduced rate of $250.00 for “Kaufman Hebrew School” families. Payment can be included with the monthly payment plan.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah – As a boy or girl nears the age of bar or bat mitzvah, preparations for the big day begin. During the first part of the year, parents can schedule a meeting with your Family educator to discuss the different options for a bar/bat mitzvah. The tutoring is done during Hebrew School hours. If you are interested in our bar/bat mitzvah Services please fill out the attached form. The fee for tutoring services is $550.00. All Hebrew School and bar/bat mitzvah fees must be paid prior to the bar/bat mitzvah.

Locations and Times – Classes are once a week on Sunday mornings between 9:15 and 12:00 in Half Hollow Hills West, 375 Wolf Hill Rd., Dix Hills. There will be programs scheduled at other times to coincide with holidays and other special occasions.
